在新聞群組及電子郵件中最早使用的情緒指示詞是一些縮寫用語，目的是要讓閱讀者能夠了解寄件者的態度及想法。接著縮寫也快速成為鍵盤上使用的捷徑。縮寫在立即訊息中使用地特別廣泛，主要是為了維持即時交談時的速度。
